Executive Function in the Classroom: Practical Strategies for Improving Performance and Enhancing Skills for All Students Illustrated Edition

This is a wonderful book for a teacher, parent, or therapist who is serious about learning and implementing strategies to help a child (or adult) with executive dysfunctions. It begins with a brief neuropsychological overview of executive functions, followed by salient issues in the assessment of them. Four important chapters describe how any one, or a combination of weaknesses, could influence academic performance in math, reading, writing, and study skills. Specific strategies, many with charts or templates which would be copied or individualized, are given. This book would be great to use in a professional or collage study group. School psychologists and therapists will also find it helpful when looking for specific strategies to recommend or use directly with clients.

This book is a "must have" for the special educator's or classroom teacher's library of educational books. It's well written and provides examples for educators to recognize and then help identify their students' needs. The take away for me was that we (teachers and staff) must collaborate when using chosen strategies across the school setting. I know our time is limited within the school day but with time spent on a list of strategies that we could all employ, we could be more effective. Our school is seriously recognizing the executive functioning deficiencies that classroom teachers are dealing with on a daily basis, so we are collating multiple strategies to be accessed by our teachers by a team of special educators this summer. I've been wanting to purchase this book for some time, especially after having attended several if Chris Kaufman's. Like his seminars/workshops...very informative in language one can understand and easily relate!

I have a student this year (as a veteran teacher of 23 years) that really needs me to gain more insight and knowledge into how I can better assist him with his executive function challenges. It is incredible informative and has real concrete suggestions and approaches that I am finding so valuable. "Executive functioning" is one of the latest buzz words in education, and I know what it looks like, but I really needed to know how to better serve this student and offer more helpful suggestions to his parents who are do incredibly supportive. I highly recommend this book to all teachers…so helpful!

This book provides a plethora of information on what should be the next big push in education-- enhancing the executive skills of our students. Dr. Kaufman gives a variety of suggestions which should assist all classroom teachers in connecting with and helping their students stay connected with the lesson. This is a very readable book with a chapter describing seven general strategies for developing executive functioning in the class. The next three chapters describe specific ways executive functioning interferes with the academic topics of reading, writing and mathematics.A must read for the 21st century educator!

I ordered this book and it came when stated in perfectly new condition. This is a great guide for anyone that may have a child struggling with focus issues in school or at home. It is a well written book that I highly recommend for teachers and parents to be able to identify these issues, understand why they occur and learn strategies to mitigate the problems.

Really enjoy the content and resources & info. Helpful material

Very disappointed in this. I bought this because it claims to make the topic of executive functioning easy to understand for the average person. It specifically bought it because it said to have"memorable metaphors and crystal-clear explanations of brain functioning. Teachers will immediately grasp what executive function is and how it affects students' learning and behavior"An example random sentence from the book, "The specific means of control of others, self-regulation, and planning to which children are exposed also play major determining roles in the manner in which children's executive skills become manifest." Yes, the sentences make sense, but it's not an easy read and doesn't bring it to layman's terms.This is a very academic language heavy book. I'm three chapters in, and I really can't give you a good definition of what executive functioning is. I am a special education teacher, and often purchase books about various education topics (Mindset, Multiple Intelligences, etc). All of the previous books I have purchased have put things in to simple terms that I can then easily put in to teaching. This book does not. If you enjoy heavy academic books, maybe this would be good for you. If you're a parent who wants a clear explanation in layman terms of what executive functioning is and specific ways to help your child, this is not your book.Given the price, I'm really disappointed. I'll be going with a competing book called "Smart, But Scattered", which based on reviews seems to be a better fit for what I'm looking for.
