Perfect for Ultralight applications
My wife and I built a couple of Ultra setup with this reel and the TFO Trout-n-Panfish II rods. As someone who is prone to buying more expensive reals I am really impressed with how smooth this real is--drag included. It balances with 6'6" rod perfectly and holds more than enough line for UL\L fishing (I have the 1000 version). We call this rod/reel combo our magic wands, because with little effort we can put the smallest of baits exactly where we want them with total ease. It really is quite amazing.

Very smooth Reel
Between my son (age 9) and I we have a few reels, but we just started fishing last year. We have a few south bend, which...yeah there's a reason i got myself a Shimano. We have two Pfluger's, a Kast king, a Mitchell 300, and an Okuma epixor 20. (pfluger 35 lady president, and golden wing combo with 30 sized president I think.) We fish for bluegill, bass, and sometimes trips to the trout farm, or the occasional pike from the local lake that surprise us. I got the shimano 1000 FI for myself to use on panfish (and probably the trout farm). as I said, I'm new at fishing, but this reel is very smooth. It is solidly build, and very well finished. No it doesn't have an anti reverse switch, and I don't care I don't like them anyway because the kids just tangle the lines around them... I haven't fished the reel yet, but I am very happy with it. lifelong fisherman or not, it's fairly easy to see if something is built with qaulity, and the shimano reel is. Last year I got a Kast King centron 500, and it doesn't even compare to my new shimano 1000. Considering the price is under 100$ i feel that it is a great value for the money. I plan on combining the shimano 1000 on a light weigh Fenwick rod for me to use as a light weight setup, i belive it will fill the role very well.

Reel seat doesn't fit my hand the way that older models did.
This was my first reel purchase in quite a few years. I trust and recommend Shimano as a brand. I'm very pleased with the quality of the reel overall. My only complaint comes from the reel seat. There is a short distance between the reel seat and the first bend to where the reel seat meets the reel itself. This distance is just short enough that it pinches my finger in between the reel and the rod a little bit, enough to be annoying. I reached for another rod that has an older Shimano reel on it for comparison. That one felt fine. The difference has to be only a fraction of an inch, but Shimano definitely changed it. I don't have large hands, so I can't be the only person with this complaint. Otherwise, the reel is great. I'll keep using my other rod and I guess this will be the one that I loan to my wife and daughter. They don't seem to mind it since they have smaller hands than I do.

Great reel for the price.
It's a solid reel for the price. It's smooth, and not particularly heavy. Casts and reels as smooth as you'd expect from a shimano, but doesn't come with the high price that you'd expect from shimano. Bought the smaller size for a medium-light rod and couldn't be happier. It matches the Shimano FX Aeroglass perfectly for a great looking combo.

Very impressed
Paired with a Fitzgerald Fishing Bryan Thrift series drop shot rod, this reel is very smooth, very light and has performed extremely well from day one. Originally bought it to be my primary Crappie fishing set up, but it has since, accidently, caught several largemouth bass over 5 lbs, a 7 lb catfish and unfortunately a really big mudfish. hahahahaha! The drag on this reel, although an "ultra light" reel, is smooth and durable. I have recommended it to several of my other guides and serious angler friends.

I don’t know
Price is good but the quality and durability is not what I expect from shimano.
