TEMPORARY TRAITOR
I hang my head in shame...At the moment, I have no beard...It was full and thick and red (I don't know why someone with dark brown hair would have a red beard, but I suspect it has something to do with one of my Irish ancestors knocking up a Scottish woman)...For two weeks a battle raged...Keep the beard and wonder what my face looks like, or remove it and KNOW what my face looks like...Curiosity won...I saw my face, and decided to grow it back that instant...A week later, I'm still clean shaven...I want the beard back, but the thought of freaking the hell out my niece, who's never seen my face, is too overwhelming...Hopefully I can accomplish my goal this weekend, and put the razor down...I may as well relay my experience with this balm, and the company as well, while I'm here...I started buying this balm about a year ago, after another balm "Navigator Class something or other" helped my beard pick up anything it touched (like this product does), but without any benefits...After applying "Smooth Viking" oil to my beard while it's still moist from washing, I scrape out a pearl about the volume of a 3/8 inch ball bearing with my fingernail, rub it between my palms to melt it, (If you don't melt it, you'll just adorn your beard with something that looks rather disgusting)...Once it's evenly melted all over my hands I attack my beard by grabbing it and pulling it to ensure it's evenly distributed, then work it in with my fingers and finally the "Smooth Viking" bristle brush to finish the job...My beard by itself is like steel wool...I have had to remove hair splinters from my hands before after trimming...After applying this balm (and the oil) religiously for several days, the steel wool gives way to waxy rabbit fur...Another benefit besides softening is a minimum amount of control...Brush it smooth and it stays that way...I am under no obligation to write this next part since there were no deals to write an "Unbiased review in exchange for blah blah blah"...This just proves it's a cool company...After a few purchases of "Smooth Viking", I received an ongoing 15% discount...And about a month ago I was given a full free tin for reasons unknown...Time to stop writing...This particular insomniac is finally, thankfully, fighting to stay awake...No idea what I wrote, but hopefully there's some useful information in here...RecommendedGOOD LUCK !!!08/18/18It seems I can't work on this review unless it's the middle of the night and I'm not fully coherent...Last time I waited the insomnia out...This time I'm stoned on sleeping pills...Anyway, I have two errors in this review and one new development...1- When I wrote that this stuff picks up anything it touches, I left out the fact that this goes away once the balm has hardened back up...2- When I wrote 15% discount, I was mistaken...It was only 10%...3- The ongoing 10% discount deal from "Smooth Viking" has been nixed...Off I go, the useless sleeping pills have fully kicked in and thinking is now like trying to swim in quicksand...Hope this helps...Again, Good Luck !!!

AMAZING STUFF !!!
Just yesterday, my optometrist brought up my beard saying how badly he wants a beard. However, he'll grow one and then quickly shave it back off because he never feels like his beard itself looks nice. When I told him what a distinct difference the Smooth Viking beard oil and balm made for my own beard, he stopped the exam to write the two names down saying he was going to start growing another beard tomorrow and order everything after he got home that night. The same day, a man leaving a restaurant I was going into for lunch held the door open and commented that my beard was really great. While this kind of thing NEVER happened to me before, it happens all the time now.For reference, though, my beard isn't a huge or really long one. It's only about four inches at my chin and trimmed progressively shorter toward the ears. So, it's not a showboat beard...just a nice full beard with red, auburn, blond, and gray in it. The Smooth Viking beard oil and balm make it really shine, though, and the colors stand out.I was completely against using beard specific products in spite of the shocked and disbelieving reactions when asked what products I used. Originally, I thought beards were just normal hair and beard specific products were a waste of time and money. So, I simply used regular hair products on it. Every time I honestly answered the question of what I used on it, the reaction to that would be about the same, "Oh man, no. You can't use that regular sh*t on your beard!!!" I would just roll my eyes and let a few unspoken derogatory comments run through my mind. Then, someone with their beard wax on them actually put it in my beard while I patiently allowed it. The product smelled nice and did provide some control. So, I did some research and decided to try the Smooth Viking brand because of its high ratings and great reviews. I found I did like the results, though I only used it off and on. I later looked at the beard oil and, given the reasonable price, decided to try that too. Now I'm extremely glad I did, am a very definite convert, and use both religiously every day. As a result, I now get constant compliments on my beard...something that never happened before. People even compare how nice my beard looks compared to the beards of other men in the room or circle of friends. It is kind of hard for me to answer that it's the Smooth Viking products I use when asked, though. I like having the nicest or one of the nicest beards in the room and mine looking better than the bigger and longer ones.

good at softening and adding a little bit of structure to medium length beards, not so great for short beards
TLDR- i have medium length wavy beard- some control, not much. good at softening and adding a little bit of structure to medium length beards- not great for shorter beards (no control, just adds oil)- it smells nice enough. pretty girls i know preferred this one over lots of others (yes, i made them smell 5 in a row and choose their fav), although it's more "deodorant-y" than say, a tobacco vanilla scent. i like the tobacco vanilla, they like this one. go figure.- sleeper hit: you might find yourself going back to it over other stuffi've got a lot of products in my drawer right now, but i keep using this one because it adds enough control to sort of smooth things out without too much wax that mashes my beard down and leaves a bunch of rando hairs sticking out. i did a marathon trial of beard balms, waxes, oils, etc. and my beard is sort of like ryan reynolds in the attached pic (without the good looks).i think if you rock a shorter beard (or have straighter beard hair), you'd want a stronger wax to sort of keep it in place. but at some point, if your beard gets long enough, you want to add SOME control without going crazy. you want something that will let your beard do its thing and really just keep it from turning into copper wire.so all in all, i didn't think i'd like this stuff and yet i keep coming back. consider using a more wax-like product for mustache in combo with this if you really want to get uncomfortably obsessive about grooming your face rug.
