Devin Townsend is one of the most creative, prolific, and fun musicians alive. This concert video may not be as crazy and off-the-wall as Retinal Circus, but it still does a good job showcasing Devy's talents. This set actually contains 2 full shows- "By Request" is a compilation of Devy's previous work, and "Ocean Machine" is the titular album in full. The digipack set has each concert on its own music CD as well. For fans, this is just the best.Part 1, By Request: The Devin Townsend Project plays a myriad of tracks from Devin's prolific solo career, from his most popular tracks to things they've never or rarely played live before. It's absolutely a "best of", and fans will be ecstatic at some of the surprises. As if that wasn't enough in and of itself, the band is backed up by the Orchestra of Plovdiv- including a choir. The Orchestra mostly accentuates and punctuates the existing music, adding without interfering or changing. It's a really great combination. Newcomers and fans alike can appreciate this set, thanks to the lack of "wankery" where they don't turn the stage over to an extended viola solo or anything. Devin does however play a lot of his own pieces which feature extended guitar solos, which is a rarity given Devin's hatred of big flashy guitar solos.Part 2, Ocean Machine. Enter Squid, the original bassist from Ocean Machine who takes over duties alongside the remaining personnel from DTP. I love this album. It's equal parts catchy, poppy, experimental, thoughtful, and extreme. It all climaxes with "The Death of Music", whose original recording clocks in at 12:15. The song is performed in its entirety, flawlessly. He even manages to end the album with the gigantic scream it originally ended with, which is a massive physical feat given he just belted out 2 full sets and this is 20+ years on his career. Absolutely amazing to see this album live, and incredible that it was done so well.This is just everything people love about Devy. He jokes with the orchestra and audience. He belts out screams and high notes. He plays popular tracks, he plays forgotten gems, he plays Ocean Machine. 10/10 would watch the whole thing again in one sitting. Masterpiece.

Devin Townsend Project at some of their absolute best. The performances are all fantastic, between the 2-disc "By Request" set and Ocean Machine being played in its entirety. The live sound is well captured and well mixed, to a point where it's easily a much better listening experience than the original Ocean Machine album recording. All members are at the top of their game and have matured their sound and skills in the 20 years since OM was released. It may not be the original lineup, however they still capture all the hidden magic of OM brilliantly.

As a long time Devy fan, this was an instant purchase. Devin performs his masterpiece 1997 release (which was an extracurricular activity to SYL) live, with an orchestra, in a Roman amphitheater. You get the full OM performance as well as two discs of live songs from his other DTP releases AND a DVD of the grand sh'bang. Look, back in the day, when one would go to dedicated record/CD stores like NRM this thing would likely be around $50 or more. Holy crap this is only selling for $20! For at least 12 or so years, Devin has been my most favorite musician as he always delivers diverse but incredibly deep songs (see Kingdom from Physicist as a song example, or the whole Addicted or Transcendence albums. Or any release really). It breaks my heart that he doesnt seemingly get the praise from the music industry that I feel he deserves. The man is an absolute genius. If you somehow came to this review without ever hearing any of his works, please give this a purchase, its an incredible value. Then continue your journey and feast on...just everything else he's blessed us with.

DVD was awesome, but I have to say that the sound quality of the CD's was a bit off. Not sure why this happens more and more with newer compact disc releases. Roger Waters' last solo release had the same 'compressed' sound quality. The Enigma release from a year or two ago had the high quality sound that CD's have historically provided... so, maybe it's hit and miss. This DVD of the DTP performance was awesome and I am not going to drop a star because of the CD quality.

Never really gave the DTP much of a chance, did't really care for StrappingYoung Ladd. How you are live says a lot about you as a band. Guess now IHave to buy all the DTP disc. This live set is amazing.

Of all Dev's live releases this is by far the most rewarding. The mix is so close to being 5-star. To my ears, the kick was just swallowing up the strings far too much. Outside of that the songs are great, the performance was great and the ambience was great. The DVD is quite satisfying albeit very BLUUUUUUE.

Devin Townsend is a genius. This album is one of the best sounding live recordings I've heard. I guess that's what a Greek theater can do for acoustics. HahaOcean machine and a collection of fan requests, plus a dvd of the whole show.

Amazing performance. The sound of this concert is unreal, especially the drum sound. It is light years ahead of Royal Albert Hall or Retinal Circus in terms of sound and production. The dvd visually can get washed out at times due to the intense blue light used on stage.

I wanted to go to this concert, I'm sad I missed it. Having this Bluray helps to make up for missing it.In some ways it's even better than being there... sit on your town couch, crank it up as loud (or quiet if you want) and be able to rewind if you missed something. Or even the ability to jump to specific songs.

As swansong's go, this is a corker. DTP at this stage was a well oiled machine, with tens of months on the road under their belts, so technically & musically they are on point throughout. The choice of songs for the "By Request" set is fantastic; obviously, all fans will lament certain omissions, but that is the nature of these types of performances.The main attraction is of course the performance of Ocean Machine (Biomech if you go back that far). It goes without saying that this is a classic performance of a truly classic album, made all the more poignant by Brian Waddell ceding his bass seat to John "Squid" Harder from the original album recording. Read up on the reasons if you want to, but it makes this performance particularly special.All things considered, this concert was a big deal - Devy & co. only had one crack at it (no filming two nights and cherry picking the perfomances) so the fact it was so damn fine, is truly amazing. Cheers, DTP - you will be fondly remembered.

Hab noch nie solch geilen Metal mit Orchester gesehen.Hammer Sound, heftig fettes Schlagzeug. Den Drummer find ich mittlerweile richtig gut.Devin ist nicht nur einer der besten Musiker unserer Zeit, sondern auch einer der besten Sänger und Entertainer.
