The Coelacanth, an ancient fish first discovered in fossils, was believed to have become extinct some 66 million years ago. Imagine the surprise when one was caught in a fisherman’s net in 1938. Given such discoveries, it shouldn’t come as a surprise to you that even in our “smart phone”-dominated world, wired phone service still exists, and that some of the more gray among us refuse to let it die. As wired phone service is not of much use without a wired telephone, that’s where products like the Alcatel “Epure” phone comes in.The design aesthetic strikes me as a bit “2001-Space-Odyssey-like” and I was concerned it might clash with the decidedly non-minimalist (maximalist?) decor of my home, but no problem. It’s benign enough to fit right in anywhere.Despite its small size and strangely light weight, it offers a wide variety of functions, including intercom and voicemail/answering machine capability. The latter has proven very convenient. In discarding my old phone, I was able to also pitch the old GE answering machine, opening up valuable real-estate on my end-table.If you have caller ID activated, it appears the phone has the ability to screen for people you might not want to hear from (muting the ringer) while letting approved callers vie for your attention. I don’t, so this functionality remains unused/untested.The ringer is very loud, it can be turned down, but not as much as I’d like. The phone allows you to select from one of several different “ring” sounds. A combination of a lower volume and less aggressive musical passage seems about right for me.The base station screen backlight can be overly bright. Luckily there is one level of “dim” available, and if all else fails, you can turn it off completely.While the audio quality during the call seems OK, the speaker through which recorded calls are reviewed has a tendency to distort and muddle the sound. This can be compensated for, to some degree, by reducing the volume.While the base station is connected to a wired network, the handset itself is wireless. You can walk around the room and do other things while chatting, without having to worry about tangling yourself in a cord.Is this phone perfect? No.... though to be fair, in my opinion, nothing will ever best the classic Western Electric Model 500. But among the remaining available options, it does a pretty nice job, and you’re likely to be happy with it.

I have an elderly friend who needed a new user friendly phone that included an answering machine. He is 95 so the phone had to be easy to use and not take up too much room. This one is perfect. It has a slim design, was easy to program and is very user friendly, even for an older guy. Price was super reasonable at just $49.99.
