REGULAR DISCHARGING AND CHARGING IS THE KEY TO LONG LIFE.
Professionals have no problem discharging or discharging these batteries to keep them in good condition.Things are different for the DIY'er like myself who has 2 Paslode projects a year.I bought my last Paslode cordless battery in 2006 and it is still good. The secret to NiCad batteries is to exercise them. If not used, most of these batteries will run down in about 75 days. Therefore, I keep a calendar to remind me when to recharge them. If there is any voltage left, I drain and then fully recharge.Building your own inexpensive discharge device is simple.I soldered a small copper rod, 12-gauge, 3-inches long to the sides of three 12-volt auto tail light bulbs. I soldered another rod to the ends of the bulbs and attached + and - (black & white) wires to the ends of the rods. I flattened the bare ends of the wires with solder. A rubber band or a bit of electrical tape will hold the wire ends onto the battery terminals for discharging.Don't leave the battery unattended. A fully charged Paslode battery will take about 20 minutes to discharge. When the bulbs become almost too dim to see, I remove them.I cut a template or jig out of 1/2-inch cabinet plywood to fit around the end of the Paslode battery allowing a small notch at each terminal just large enough to slip the wires into and stay tight against the terminals. This works great.Take care of these batteries and they will last for years.Hobby Shops sell computer operated chargers and dischargers for a wide range of battery types but most cost over $100.00.A 2-pack of 12-volt tail light bulbs is less than $5.00.Don't pay cash. Just charge it.
