Big Brother & the Holding Company

The music is great as is the value for 5 discs. The presentation is also very nice, a book with interesting content and nice graphics that also holds the discs BUT if I could just meet the idiot who designed the disc retention system so that I could forcibly point out how STUPID it is. The discs are stacked on top of each other. 2 on one inside cover of the book and the other 3 on the back inside cover. The mechanism for retaining them is useless, locks them in near permanently and breaks either itself or the disc when one tries to remove them. I now have a damaged box because of some moron who didn't actually try and USE their product.

I knew very little of Janis Joplins work. But I liked the couple of songs I had heard so decided to investigate further, I wasn't sure which album to buy, but saw this box set of all 4 of her studio albums, reasonably priced, so decided to take a punt. I created a playlist of the whole box set, with the intention of removing the weakest tracks after a few listens to create my own best of. 8 times through the playlist and not a single track has been removed and to be honest I doubt any will. What a voice she had and how she could interpret a song. I wish I'd discovered these albums 30 years ago.

the only issue is that the tracks are in the wrong order on the cd-that is to say... Album One= "Be A Brother" should be the first album on the cd, but it isn`t... "How Hard It Is" comes first..so the track listings don`t make sense, and the natural flow and progression from Be a Brother to How Hard it Is, is lost. Presumably it`s an issue with the mastering, or the disc copying.

I didn't buy this via this seller. I ordered it and was offered no reason as to why my order was cancelled.So I bought it from another source.It's something I just had to have.I bought all Janis's albums back in the day - still got all that lovely old vinyl - but here are her 1st 4 albums just toremind us all how great & fantastic she really was. And some rare pearls on the bonus EP cd. Great stuff.Nearly 50 years since she rocked out and left us all... unbelievable. Very sad. And still the greatest.God Bless you Janis, wherever you are.

Here is Big Brother and the Holding Company WITH Janis Joplin, not yet famous, playing more for the joy than the Benjamins. The studio was used to recording jazz musicians and kept asking the band to turn down their sound, which is humorous now but then it caused the group to produce a record with a very clean sound. Janis was not half-drunk, the band was not self-important, the musicians were actually darned good so this album is indeed a gem. You can hear various influences in their style, a tiny bit of Jefferson Airplane, some folk, lots of blues included in the rocking recording. I think BBHC deserves some credit for being a band worthy of respect and not simply the guys playing behind Janis. Here is the group before fame and fortune and all the dangers thereof had come to them. I love it! Who would have thought that the first of their albums would be recorded far from The City in Chicago??! Yet if you think of it, since Chicago is a blues haven, it is apropos. Five stars!

Als Janis Joplin zum zweiten Mal in ihrem Leben nach San Francisco aufbrach, um sich als Sängerin durchzusetzen(das erste Mal scheiterte sie und ging dann aufs College), hatte sie weitaus mehr Glück und wurde herzlich von der bereits bestehenden Band "Big Brother & The Holding Company" aufgenommen. Der gemeinsame Plan war von nun an, Janis nach und nach als Leadsängerin der Band zu etablieren, da die Jungs von ihrer kraftvollen Stimme total begeistert waren. Man arbeitete also schrittweise darauf hin. Dies ist die erste Platte der Band mit ihrem neuen Mitglied Janis und die Songs sind durchaus gelungen und sehr hörenswert. Janis kommt kraftvoll rüber, genauso wie auf ihren späteren Alben auch. Die Negativkritik einiger Rezensenten kann ich überhaupt nicht nachvollziehen. Dieses Album ist das Erstlingswerk einer Band in Neuformation, sowohl personell wie auch musikalisch; und wirklich gut.
