Non-Designer's Design Book, The: Design and Typographic Principles for the Visual Novice

One of the most influential books on design
This helped me understand graphic design and typography. Perhaps this sound like a very basic outcome I got, but let me tell you - this is a game changer. It helped understand the metaphysics behind composition of contrast, typefaces etc, the metaphysics man! I was able to apply knowledge straight away after reading, what normally would take practice! Excellent explanation, addressed to simple reader. Lots of books can take it as a benchmark on how to share knowledge in practical ways. Thank you Robin!!!!

Great practical and directly useable advice for people with little or no formal design experience
This is a great book. I only wish I'd read it a long time ago. It's well written, structured and doesn't get bogged down in unnecessary detail. The author has been teaching this for years, so she knows a thing or two about good design. If you ever find yourself having to design anything really (flyers, birthday or greeting cards, photo books, presentations...) but don't have any formal training in design this book will help. It starts with basic principles: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment and Proximity and how they are applied to practically every design. There are some examples of bad design and the suggestions the author proposed to fix the problems.

Trained my unprofessional eye exponentially
Love this book, clear, concise information on design, formatting, contrasts and colours. Everytime I see a printed ad now I'm assessing it and rebuild the ones in my head how I would redesign the not so good ones.Especially the colour section is easy to understand,I used to put the wrong colours together not knowing how they are related to make a design more effective. Really pleased with this book and keep revisiting for colour coordination.

Just what I needed.
I bought this as I'm due to start a new job where I'll be expected to do some design work, and it brilliantly describes all the basics that I had a vague idea about in a coherent, logical way. It's not too long neither and has good examples and as such is a good bite-sized design guide!

Rewrite
Rewrite of earlier book of same name and author. If you have the earlier version you do not need this one. However, it is an interesting and useful book to have.

Not the best design
This has a lot of helpful tips about choosing fonts/design basics, but I'm not sure how much I trust the advice considering the interior doesn't look very well designed to me, though of course it's personal preference.

Best comprehensive, yet practical graphic design book I’ve read in years.
Since I’m not a professional designer and my graphic design was rusty, I bought this book to brush up and improve my skills. Right away, I appreciated that this author spared me discussions of esoteric topics—like color theory and the nuances of typography—that are best reserved for other books to be read by a small number of academics and designers. Instead, she focused her book on helping me become a better designer quickly with lots of practical tips and techniques. The book was filled with lots of easy-to-apply suggestions I could start using right away to make my design work look more professional. To make it easy to grasp design concepts, the author had lots of before and after examples that helped me understand the differences between weak amateurish designs and eye-catching professional looking designs that I could be proud to share with others.

Chock full of valuable information
I love this book. As a small business owner, I budget by creating many of my own business cards and promo items. This book has opened my eyes to a professional graphic designer's secrets. Some of it is over my head but have gleaned so much about good design and typography tips. I'd like to thank the author personally!

Excelente
