How you'd hook it to your mixer would be dependent on which 500 series power supply you have, because that's where the in and out connections would be located. Q: Can I use this as a standalone or do I need to put it in a rack or similar?

This is designed to install into a 500-series rack. The rack provides the power and the connectors for the audio input and output. I think Golden Age makes a standalone version of this preamp that is self-contained, in a 1U rack package if I'm remembering correctly.
