The book uniquely captures the struggle between the British Empire's colonial forces and indigenous resistance in the Horn of Africa called Dervish. Inspite of its prejudice, the writer covered a treasure trove of history.

Masterfully written though dated biography of a brutal leader
Jardine was a veteran colonial administrator who was obviously pro-British, but not unsympathetic to the populations in Africa, Asia, and the West Indies where he served. This book is well organized, his prose highly descriptive and elegantly written. While Somali nationalism (such as there is) and religious fervor are understandable enough no one should be under any illusion as to what a cruel and brutal leader the Mad Mullah (named so by his fellow Somalis not the British) was and how misconceived any lasting folk hero status he might still retain. One should also read Roy Irons new book titled Churchill and the Mad Mullah, which nicely supplements Jardine, though not without problems of its own.

I LIKED THIS BOOK, BECAUSE IT WAS ABOUT A SOMALI AFRICAN WARRIOR WHO DID EVERYTHING HE CAN TO FREE HIS COUNTRY FROM FOREIGN INTERVENTION, BUT WHAT I DIDN'T LIKE ABOUT THIS BOOK IS THAT IT WAS ONE SIDED AND FULL OF BRITISH PROPOGANDA
