ALTRAOlympus 5 Hike Low Gtx mens Sneaker

I transitioned from the Olympus 5.0s to the GTXs for a backpacking trip through the Sierra Nevada mountains on the Pacific Crest Trail last month. The shoes held up extremely well. The 33 mms of cushioning protected my feet from the often rocky terrain. The sole gripped the decomposed granite trail very well. I liked the wide toe box (big reason why I’ve backpacked in Lone Peaks and Olympus Altras). The GTXs seemed to dry out fairly quickly after fording streams when I couldn’t rock hop across. Until I find something better, the GTXs will be my go-to trail runners for backpacking. For the price (under $120), I bought two additional pairs for future backpacking seasons.

When you first slip these on you may have a concern that the heel is a bit mushy resulting the the heel setting slightly lower than the toe. For me wearing them for a couple of hours brought them into good form. Almost like a glove. Point being, they were tight and mushy at first, but after wearing them around the afternoon they fit like a glove and are really comfortable. They are not road runner ultra-light but a good sturdy weight and WIDTH for trail running. Hope folks find this helpful.-Tim C.

I liked the idea of this shoe, a lot. Other reviewers pointed this out, I am just adding to the complaint. These are not the same as all the other Altras in terms of fit, and wide toe box. The look like Altras but feel like they were made by a totally different company. I couldn't handle wearing these around the house for an hour. I am not sure if this material will break in, for me these are way too tight around the ball of my foot out of the box, and too expensive to take the risk that they might stay this tight. If you have narrow feet these may be the Altras for you.

They are falling apart after one wash through the washing machine. Not even two moths old and these are already trash.

12.5 in Nikes. This one barely fits at 12.5. odd fit. odd sizing. too bulky to hike/run trails
