The Departmental Guide and Record Book for Student Outcomes Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness: Enhancing Student Learning and Institutional Performance through Effective Assessment Practices

Dated but useful
This book came out when assessment at institutions of higher education began getting on the assessment bandwagon. Allot has changed since this book first came out. While James Nichols reamins an inportant figure in higher education assessment - the material in the book has becoem a bit dated in terms of the assessment forms used and the inporatance of using assessment results to make changes to the institution. The book is somewhat useful but perhaps there is more up-to-date mathods and materials out there.

Good start for assessment planning and record keeping
Dr. Nichols provides a good overview of the assessment process in this book. It follows on his several others. Most important: This book has sample assessment records in it - thus it is excellent for those trying to set-up an assessment program in their department. We used it for our initial template for ABET and SACS records. Even the most confused (stubborn?) came around after reading it. For beginners and veterans alike.
