Q: Does the laptop compartment open up to get through TSA easily without pulling laptop out?

I would say no. It’s just sort of a divider in the main section. I don’t know how you would avoid pulling the laptop out.

Q: does this have a rain cover?

no, but it is some what water resistant.

Q: What is the warranty period? this is the second high sierra backpack that failed to make it through a school year.

I used this for university purposes...and I normally get 2-3 years out of one bag. And I only change because I want something new, I don't NEED to change them. And I work them out in terms of load, environmental exposure and daily use.
