Q: Is the picture plastic?

No it is not. I bought it for my 5th grader and he lives it and it is good quality

Q: Is this a big back pack? Is this Wolf back pack suitable for a 5 yr old boy?

It has two side pockets that are mesh that will hold a water bottle just fine. There is only one main area in the zipper part. But my granddaughter could fit her chrome book, and a couple 2 inch binders and all the other folders she needed for her classes last year. This bookbag lasted her the whole school year and part way through this school year. The straps finally just gave up. But I would say it is well worth my money.
