Heavyweight Boxing in the 1970s: The Great Fighters and Rivalries

The 70's Boxing Historian
The author has compiled a very interesting, compelling, and readable history of the 1970's heavyweights. Considered by many to be the single greatest decade of heavyweights ever, this book on the heavies of the 1970's will instruct, provide insight, and bring back so many great memories of all the epic fights of that decade. While the very best fights are more detailed, the author also covers the important secondary fights, and even gives consideration to the "bums" who were stepping stones for the more talented in the division. The book begins with an excellent summary of the decades of boxing beginning in the Jack Johnson era to present, and then gets down to his favorite subject, the exciting 1970's. As someone who considers himself knowledgeable of that boxing decade, I learned so much from this book, details about fights, personalities, promoters, wives, etc. that it was well worth my time; in fact, I truly enjoyed every page of this excellent book. I had considered selling this book after reading it, but it is so good that I want it to be a part of my boxing library as the definitive source of the 1970's heavyweight division. If you are a boxing fan, you will like this book. If you are a boxing fan who grew up in this era, you will love this book.kone

70's Heavyweight Boxing generation
There are many Boxing books to choose from, and picking through them all can be hit or miss(no pun intended). The first fight I saw was with my Grandfather in '73,and happened to be Ali-Norton I.Wow,what an introduction to the fight game.I peppered G-Pa with qusestions, read "RING" regularly and and any boxing books I could find in thrift shops.Growing up in this golden period of the Heavyweight division was a blessing for fans.Besides a constant quality of Top 10,Ali title fights were onTV.Only for major Superfights was there closed circuit. But,many of the great fights(or just to see "The Greatest" against anyone) the public could see on TV....that said :This is a fantastic book, well worth the $35 ,that even gave me cause to pause several months.Joe Ryan writes in such a vivid, riveting way as to put you in the ring. You feel the sweat fly,the eyes swelling shut, blood splattered trunks. As well, you feel as if you're inside the head of the boxers. Also,I found out about fights I did't know took place. The book gives you a look at the inside of negotiations,promoting,purses...why fight were fought where they were.By far the best of the dozen books on Boxing I have.Highly recommended.

Great book about the greatest decade of HEAVYWEIGHTS
If it had pictures I would give it 6 stars....As a young boxing fan I use to walk an extra 10 blocks ,to go to the candy store that sold THE RING magazine. It is hard to explain to young Boxing fans how great it was in the '70s. Fighters would climb the rankings depending on who they beat ...The RING rankings were true. Fights were on TV ,and it was THE GREATEST era of HEAVYWEIGHT boxing. I used to argue with my uncle SAL who would tease me with the THIRTIES and FIFTIES,maybe for other weights ,but not the Heavies. (Before he passed he had changed his tune i think after QUARRY-NORTON) This book not only summarizes the other decades quite well, but really brings back the intensity of those 70's contender battles. IF you like boxing it is a must. Thank You

One of the best I've read!
Ive been a boxing fan for over 45 years and this is one of the very best books on the sport Ive had the honor of reading! Heavyweight Boxing In The 1970's goes into great detail about the fights and the fighters that made the 1970s the greatest decade for not only heavyweight boxing , but for the sport in general! Though at first,I did'nt like the fact that the book had no pictures, but that became a moot point once I began reading! The details of little publicized or forgotten fights are covered in great depth! This is not only about the 70's heavyweight scene but every decade from the 1900's to the era of the klitschko brothers! I highly recommend this fantastic book!

The best part of the book is when it strays from ...
Solid effort that covers ground that we have mostly seen before. The best part of the book is when it strays from Ali, Frazier, Foreman and into the territory of guys that most likely would have been superstars today such as Shavers, Lyle, Quarry etc.

Thoroughly Researched - Entertaining!
I bought this book not knowing much about boxing - but the author is a friend of mine, so I thought I'd show support for his book. What I found was a wealth of information written in a well laid out, very entertaining style! Joe goes beyond just providing 'details' and shows us his passion for the history of boxing in an informative, well researched, and eloquently penned style. Joe clearly relates his reasoning as to why he believes that the 1970's provided the greatest Heavyweight Boxers! He has dug beneath the surface of this exciting time in the history of boxing to provide you with little known facts, presented in a style which will make it difficult to put this book down. I wanted to keep reading 'just one more chapter' . This is a great read for boxing fans as well as history buffs as it describes events which clearly shaped our future. Excellent gift for sports fans of all ages! Joe has a gift with the pen which will grab your attention and entertain you for hours!
