Hiking the North Shore: 50 fabulous day hikes in Minnesota's spectacular Lake Superior region (There & Back Guides)
S**R
Minnesota Hiking/Backpacking Bible
This book lists the 50 best hiking trails between Duluth and Grand Portage. There are two to four pages devoted to each trail with information concerning length, difficulty, GPS coordinates and driving directions to the parking area, how to access the trail from the lot, and very detailed points of interest and advisories to keep in mind throughout the trail. Therefore, it's a very concise, interesting, and valuable resource for anyone hoping to explore the North Shore, the Superior Hiking Trail (SHT), and the Superior National Forest. The author is a good writer as well. Stylistically its a very enjoyable read. Every Midwest outdoorsman should have this book. Trust me.

Thank you for this book
I am in my 60's and love the outdoors, and the North Shore. Although I have arthritis and am an out of shape Grandma, I still want to put on my boots, grab my hiking poles and backpack full of water and energy bars, and take off on a trail. This book gave me the courage to do just that. The hikes are rated for difficulty, and I know my limits, so I only do the easy ones. This book explains where to park, how to get there, what to expect, (are there toilets?) all help ease the anxiety of a novice. You can thank Diana Nyad for opening a Pandora's box for those of us women "of a certain age" to get out there and do it, find a way. We are never too old to do what we love. So, Andrew Slade, thank you for giving me this wonderful tool, and so many lovely days in the woods and along the beautiful "sweet sea" of Lake Superior.

Excellent resource!
This book is very informative and accurate, with the exception of hike #47. Hike 47 is listed as “moderate”. While the elevation is not difficult, the trail itself is poorly marked, not maintained and overgrown. The first 2 miles near loon lake is worth the time, but the rest is mostly bushwhacking though thick overgrown forest.

Detailed book
The book gives detailed information on each hike, including directions to the trailhead, trail highlights, and trail distances. There are a lot of great hikes in the book, but some of them are not hikes at all - just walks along the shore in Duluth. I think of hiking as off asphalt, in the woods.

Worth adding to the collection
A good book to have if you want to hike the North Shore. We hiked a bunch of trails from this book and they were all nice and the trail descriptions were accurate.

Great book. I got some great tips from the author. There are more detail information if you visit the official MN site for traits and hiking details. There, you will also find park closures, alerts, and weather report. Not sure if I can type in URLs here but Trip Advisor is another good site to visit for people's comment and additional tips.

Great preparation book
I read 4 books in preparation for our trip around lake superior this summer. This one along with Gentle HIkes - were the best in preparing for our trip. We are in our 40s and 50s with only minimal to moderate experience and some health and stamina considerations. I know we are going to have a fabulous trip. Thanks to those who take the time to document natures beauty and the best ways to accesss it.
