There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim Chim Cher-ee") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider Mary Poppins to be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award until Beauty and the Beast in 1991. --Jim Emerson

One of the best movies of all time!!
Our family loves this old jewel. I would focus on the digital part of this blu-ray purchase since the description does not state clearly. This blu-ray comes with blu-ray (of course), dvd, and the digital movie code. This code can be redeemed on Disney's movies anywhere then it would immediately show up on iTunes or Vudu or whatever service you linked with Disney movies anywhere service. As of today the digital movie code included in the package works fine.

A timeless joy
I haven't watched this movie since I was a child and it was a joy to see it again and have the memories of the songs and dancing come back. The movie is updated only in the sense that the color is more vivid and the people. Definitely an upgrade from watching it on VHS. There were no parts added or taken out making it the same great movie made years ago. I couldn't be happier with purchasing this movie to watch again later down to line and sing along to. Being an adult now it was interesting to watch this and see the life lessons that it teaches that as a child you do not pick up on or register.

More movies like this one would be wonderful
It is too bad they do not make movies like this anymore. A feel good movie.......Julie Andrews was beautiful. The movies now a days are too violent, foul, or just plan crap!!

The set design is brilliant. The film was not actually shot in London ...
A classic for children and adults too. As enjoyable as ever. One thing worth mentioning: The set design is brilliant. The film was not actually shot in London but rather used painted backdrops and sets to recreate Edwardian London. The effect, in my opinion, is stunning. It doesn't look exactly like the city but an impressionistic image of the city—the city of one's imagination, as it were. It's feathered into the plot and themes of the movie so well that it acts as almost another character.

Not getting the luxury re-release treatment here
A little disappointed by the audio. I understand older films have limited technical leeway when it comes to remastering, but the sound is rather flat with little use of the rear speakers. The picture isn't much better than the old DVD I had. The only reason to splurge on this release is the compatibility with current technology- Blu-ray adds some preference controls and you can choose aspect ratio (unlike the DVD releases). The DVD locked down the aspect ratio for 4X3 screens, leaving too much black framing on ALL FOUR sides of image on wide screen LCD with no options to change that. "Zooming in" via TV controls created a fuzzy mess. The Blu-ray has all the bells and whistles you'd expect. Still love the film, though.

A classic musical that is still entrancing and fun to watch
The movie holds up well as a glorious musical. The acting, singing, choreography, staging, special effects are all great. The plot still works. This is a movie my wife and I love watching over and over. The blu ray version is beautiful. The quality of the image shows itself during the extreme close-ups of Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke -- the images are crystal clear with no blurring on a high quality 53 inch LCD HDTV. The sound is excellent. The DVD authoring is a little idiosyncratic. Though "resume play" is activated but is only present after a lengthy video introduction and it is hard to bypass the "previews." There is a paucity of extras.

As charming today as when we were kids
My wife and I grew up watching Mary Poppins on TV once a year, the GenXers who fell in love with Mary and Bert and the family of Banks. So when Amazon had a nice deal on buying the streaming version, we had to get it. We’ve watched it again and Mary Poppins remains as charming as ever.If you don’t know the story: The Banks family - father, mother, son and daughter - struggle to understand one another in Edwardian England when women were fighting for the vote and men expected the children to be seen and not heard. As the children drive away each nanny, the children send their wishes out into an ill wind and in flies Mary Poppins. Along with her friend, Bert, Mary will take the children on numerous adventures and help their parents rediscover the joy of life with children. If you’ve never seen it, this is a movie known for it’s charming and memorable songs and moments. Feed the Birds is one of my favorite song (overall) but don’t forget the other fun ones you’ll come away singing forever (think ear worms). If you’ve never seen it, spend some time with Mary and Bert and the Banks family. And if you have, come back for another visit. If you have kids, sit and watch together and rediscover the joy of time with people you love. It’s charming and sweet and saccharine, and you’ll remember it for a long time to come. Yes, a simpler time, but isn’t that what we all need from time to time...

Classic film......
......with the stunning voice of a Julie Andrews, the children enjoying fantastical adventures jumping into pastel drawn pictures on the pavement.......chimney sweeps dancing and singing on roof tops......Dick Van Dyke on fine form.....playing Bert....and the old Banker.....The children laughing so much, they join Uncle up in the ceiling, giggling so much. The Bird Lady on the steps of St Paul’s.It is not how the book was written.......it is a classic in it’s own right.Walt Disney included his cartoon skills......it is beautiful and amazing.Every generation to enjoy together, and a classic for all subsequent generations!

Faulty and wouldn't play
I bought this DVD for my 5 yr old grandaughter who came home from overseas at the beginning of July for her summer holidays. We were really looking forward to watching the film together and I hadn't even removed the paper packaging on the DVD. So great excitement .... which very very quickly turned to sadness and dismay and crossness on my part because the DVD didn't read at all: it kept stopping and I couldn't fast forward it or fast anything with it. If I never wrote before now to complain it is because I only tried to play the DVD 10 days ago .... bought well in advance of my grand-daughter's homecoming. REALLY REALLY REALLY angry to have received a faulty product.

Great film 5 Stars ...but it's adverts at the beginning that kill it....
Ok: the film is great, it's a timeless film and I really can't add anything that's not already said about it. That makes it 5 stars.BUT I really, really object after paying £6+ for the film to then have "adverts" for other films I don't wish for, or don't want my child to see.I've bought the DVD Disney forma legitimate business, I bought it because I want Mary Poppins, I really don't care about your other offerings, and when I do I'll contact you, don't waste my time having to skip the adverts. For that it's one star.

Perfect in everyway
Practically perfect in everyway! Always been a favourite film since it first appeared when I was only a toddler. Julie & Dick were the perfect acting, singing and dancing pair for this and nobody could replace them. A film you can watch time and time again and love it even more each time, especially with the animated animals included. The songs brilliant, my favourite "Feed the Birds" well it has to be when you own a parrot who sings along too! Recommend it for anyone of any age and worth a huge lot more than the price.

One of the finest family films ever made.
Inventive and enthused with quality all thru it, Mary Poppins holds up well over forty years since its release. The story is based on the Mary Poppins books written by Pamela Travers, and what a crackerjack story this adaptation turns out to be.Mother & Father Banks advertise for a nanny to tend their rowdy children. The children, after being less than impressed with previous holders of the post, decide to write their own advertisement. But Father Banks tears it up and puts it on the fire place ready for burning. The torn paper mysteriously floats up the chimney and finds its way to Mary Poppins who glides down from the sky with her umbrella to fill the vacancy. It's evident from this point that Mary is no ordinary nanny, and all she comes into contact with will have their lives changed for ever.Mary takes the children on a series of delightful journeys that take in meeting an array of interesting people and animals, and it's thru these wonderful escapades that we the audience live vicariously thru. The film has all the hallmarks of a Disney classic, wonderful songs from Richard & Robert Sherman, animation fusing delightfully with live action, colour to dazzle the eyes, and of course a charming and career making performance from Julie Andrews. Much has been made of Dick van Dyke's woeful cockney accent, and in truth it's almost cringe inducing, but his performance is so brim full of gusto and effervescent fun, we should surely let it go in the name of splendid entertainment values. The restoration job done on the 40th anniversary DVD does the film proud, and it's hopefully opened up the film to be seen more by the modern day audience, because Mary Poppins is an ode to joy, an ode to good behaviour, and basically an ode to being practically perfect--just like Mary herself actually.Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious 9/10
