This is a great way not only to learn to read music but to develop piano technique. You must start playing from Exercise 11. The first ten exercises are not to be played. They are theory exercises in note reading and the student is merely required to write the names of all the notes. I skip this step with my students.An intelligent and gifted child may be put on this book as soon as he/she has learned to read in the C position from easier books.For an Adult student it is an absolutely great book to begin their journey at the piano.After completing this book, a student may study The School of Velocity and finally The Art of Finger Dexterity.After mastering a dozen or so exercises from The Art of Finger Dexterity, as student will be read to tackle some of the easier Etudes of Chopin.Thus Czerny provides us with a course of piano study from start to finish!Should take on an average five to six years even for a gifted adult, under the guidance of a well qualified and experienced teacher.Children will take much longer. More like seven or eight years.The first book (Opus 599) can be completed by an adult in one year.

Good practice pieces for adult learner but not for beginners! Very rapidly increases in difficulty.
