DETOUR showcases Lauper’s unmistakable voice on country classics from the ‘40s, ‘50s and ‘60s and features guest appearances from county music stars. Lauper recorded the album in Nashville alongside a band comprised of the city’s top session players. The album begins with "Funnel Of Love," a track Wanda Jackson, the Queen of Rockabilly, recorded in 1960. Another highlight is the rollicking take on “Heartaches By The Number,” a country standard previously covered by everyone from George Jones to Waylon Jennings to Dwight Yoakum. DETOUR also features stunning covers of two classic Patsy Cline songs, “Walkin’ After Midnight” and her #1 smash, “I Fall To Pieces.” Lauper duets with several special guests, including country music royalty: Emmylou Harris (on the title track), Willie Nelson (“Night Life,” a song he wrote over 50 years ago), Vince Gill (Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty’s “You’re The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly”) and Alison Krauss (Dolly Parton’s “Hard Candy Christmas”).Jewel also makes an appearance on DETOUR, showcasing her prodigious yodeling skills on “I Want To Be A Cowboy’s Sweetheart,” which was the first country song by a woman to sell one million copies.

Cyndi's Detour into Country
I'm not a country music fan but there is some that I like. I've been a Cyndi Lauper fan since I was a kid, and buy everything she releases. I was kind of disappointed when I heard she'd be making a country album of all things. Though it's not a big surprise given that she has made several covers albums. Cyndi has always done covers of songs, even with Blue Angel and on her solo albums.I knew if anyone could make a country album I might like, she could, so I pre-ordered. I also bought the individual tracks that were released before the CD. Cyndi has a way of adding humor and seriousness to her recordings. I figured she would put some funny touches here and there with this one, and she does. I'm previously familiar with some of the songs, while others I never heard.1. "Funnel of Love"-Upbeat and almost rockabilly sound, reminds me of an amusement park on a summer day. I like this one, it's catchy. It gets stuck in my head but in a good way. I like singing along to it. A great opening track. 5/52. "Detour" (featuring Emmylou Harris)-This isn't as good as the first track, but I like it. Vintage sounding. This has a sound of classic country music from the past. Their voices sound good. This is a song I would've hated when I was a kid, because it has that country twang that most non-country fans don't like, but I like it now. 4/53. "Misty Blue"-A nice ballad, sad, good fit for Cyndi's serious side. It fits in her catalog with some other ballads she's done. Melancholy. 5/54. "Walkin' After Midnight"-The classic Patsy Cline song that we all know. Cyndi does it justice. She doesn't stray too far from the original. I don't know if Patsy fans would like it, I tend to enjoy Patsy's more too, but I love this one also. One of my favorites on the album. 5/55. "Heartaches by the Number"-The first song released from the album. Catchy and kind of fun. One of the more memorable tracks here. 5/56. "The End of the World"-I already knew this song as an oldies tune from the 50s. I never knew it was a country song. It's never been a favorite of mine, and Cyndi's version isn't much different. But I prefer Cyndi's cover. 3/57. "Night Life" (featuring Willie Nelson)-This one is okay. Willie Nelson's voice sounds different than what I'm used to, since I'm not familiar with his more recent work. It's not a song I'll play often. 3/58. "Begging to You"-Another good one. Another somewhat sad ballad. Like all the songs here, Cyndi makes it her own. 5/59. "You're the Reason Our Kids Are Ugly" (featuring Vince Gill)-I feel I should explain my low rating of this track. This song is kind of funny about a squabbling couple who pick on each other but stay together because in the end they love each other. But the title of the song bothers me a little, because I have a personal childhood trauma involving getting bullied as a small child and one girl always calling me names including "ugly" for no reason other than that she was cruel and vicious. So I kind of feel bad listening to a song saying kids are ugly. Even though I get the humor and message of the song. I like that they are saying looks and money don't matter. But it's my least favorite song on the album. 2/510. "I Fall to Pieces"-I really like this one. I knew the original but I think I like this version better. It's a very good cover. 5/511. "I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart" (featuring Jewel)-I used to be a Jewel fan (still like some of her songs). I'm not a fan of yodeling, but it suits this song so I don't mind it. The part when Cyndi says, "Yippee Ay Yay" mid-way through the song is hilarious. It's one of those Cyndi moments that is classic Cyndi Lauper and just makes you laugh! Cyndi's voice sounds different during the song, but when that part comes in, she sounds like Cyndi from the 80s. 5/512. "Hard Candy Christmas" (featuring Alison Krauss)-I wasn't familiar with Dolly's version before hearing this. I know of the film but have never watched the entire movie because it doesn't interest me. I already have the single version of this, which has Cyndi solo on the vocals while this one is a duet. I like the solo one better but there isn't much difference. If you're like me and don't care about the film or story, the song has it's own meaning. This is a nice, but again sad, song about a woman in tough times thinking of making changes in her life and doing things, but not really sure she will. Maybe I'll do this, maybe I'll try that. Leaves you wondering if she does or not. It's relatable to anyone unsure of what they are doing in life. 5/5Overall I enjoy the album. The highlights are Funnel of Love, Walkin' After Midnight, Heartaches by the Number, and I Fall to Pieces. Cyndi's voice still sounds the same-she's always been able to interpret songs in various ways. At times on Detour, like on I Want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart, she sounds very different. But it works. I think this album is a lot better than Memphis Blues. While there are some songs on there that I like, I hardly listen to it. It's been interesting to see how Cyndi has tried many genres. Who would have thought back in the 80s and early 90s that she would one day do a country record. I like that it doesn't sound too modern, she stays true to old country music. The retro sound works. There are some fans who won't even give Detour a try because they dislike country, or because they didn't like Memphis Blues. They want dance or pop Cyndi back. I think Detour is very good and I'll be listening to it during the summer. But I definitely would like to hear her do another album of original pop/rock songs, like her 80s albums or her dance album Bring Ya to the Brink from 2008. Maybe she lost interest in that and wants to do as many different cover albums as she can. But many of us fans would love to hear more original songs.

Song after song after song ...
I think this is her best album. She is covering a lot of people here. And every song, she covers better than the original artist.I wish she would find a way to keep her politics to herself. Like other liberals, they spray their politic all over. Makes me screech. But the singing in this album is fantastic.

When you were mine.
You know, I've been a fan of Cyndi Lauper's music since I first saw "Girls Just Want To Have Fun" on MTV back in 1983. I have consistently bought all of her albums, even 2001's hard-to-find, Japanes only release, "Shine". In fact, I believe it was with that album the Cyndi sort of lost her way. That album was supposed to be released in America, but it never happened, and instead we got and EP titled "Shine". After that, Cyndi decided to switch it up a bit by doing a standards album in 2003, a reinterpretation of her own music in 2005, a new electronic album in 2008, and a blues album in 2010. "Detour" is her first album in six years, and this time she goes country.I think of all of her cover albums I like "Detour" the best. Classic country music from the 1940's, 1950's, and 1960's, suits her personality and vocal style very well. Not all of the covers hit home, but many of them are well done. Of course, it helps that I am not familiar with most of the originals! The best tracks here are "Funnel Of Love", "Detour", "Heartaches By The Number", "You're The Reason Our Kids Are Ugly", "I Want To Be A Cowboy's Sweetheart" and "Hard Candy Christmas".Of course, I believe that Cyndi should have just stuck to her guns and kept making music her way, and 2008's "Bring Ya To The Brink" was a gift. I just wish she'd do more of that, rather than pump out cover albums. In fact, what I'd really like to see, if it's at all possible, is for Cyndi to use the same musicians and producers used for "She's So Unusual" for a sequel--maybe, "She's So Normal"? I just miss how good she was at songs like "Time After Time", "All Through The Night", "True Colors", "Change Of Heart", "I Drove All Night", "Sally's Pigeon's", "Come On Home", "Shine", etc. In fact, when was the last time Cyndi did a really good ballad? Years.Anyway, here's how "Detour" compares to Cyndi's other works:1980 Blue Angel: Two Stars1983 She's So Unusual: Five Stars1986 True Colors: Five Stars1989 A Night To Remember: Three and a Half Stars1993 Hat Full Of Stars: Five Stars1996 Sisters Of Avalon: Four Stars2001 Shine (full Japanese import): Three and a Half Stars2003 At Last: One Star2005 The Body Acoustic: Three Stars2008 Bring Ya To The Brink: Four Stars2010 Memphis Blues: Four Stars2016 Detour: Four Stars

Cyndi is the BEST!
I am totally impressed by this album which I have on CD, LP and MP3. This was definitely a labor of love and Cyndi does country as well as anyone I've ever heard. Most of these songs have always been favorites so people will naturally compare Cyndi's renditions with the originals. What a treat to hear Cyndi do Patti Page's 'Detour' and with the aide of Emmylou Harris you might imagine it is Patti Page double tracking her vocal. Misty Blue is a great country song but also a great torch song which Cyndi takes to the limit. Both Patsy Cline hits included: Walkin' After MIdnight and I Fall To Pieces are done in fine form. Although Guy Mitchell's pop recording of 'Heartaches By The Number' is probably the one best remembered by most, Cyndi has gone back to the sound of the country original by Ray Price, fiddles and all. Every song is done to perfection but my favorite is Marty Robbins' 'Begging To You'. I didn't think anyone knew how to yodel in this day and age but the yodeling on 'I Want to Be a Cowboy's Sweetheart' has proven me wrong. This is some of the best yodeling I've ever heard. Last time this song was done by anyone that I remember was Patti Page in 1951 when it was on her first studio album 'Folk Song Favorites' (10 inch LP which later incarnated on 12 inch with the title 'Romance On the Range'). This restored by faith in Cyndi Lauper.

Country Pop

A wonderful Detour into top country pop!
Always been a fan of the wonderfly kooky Cyndi Lauper. When I first hdard o this release it appealed even thougI don't havd all her albums, mostly a few greatest hit packages. This is a delightfully mostly upbeat country pop album and I only knew a few of the tracks such as End of the World and Fall to Pieces. This is a great detour for Cyndi in my view, her wonderfully distinctive voice and character adds great charm to the tracks and I particularly love the brilliant 'You're the reason our kids are ugly' 'I want to be a Cowboy's Sweetheart' and 'Heartaches the Number' all of which will get thse toes a tappin' and put a smile in your heart at the local barn dance! Seen CL promoting this on a few tv shows here and her character exudes warmth, wit and talent every ti me I see her. She makes me smile, as does this album. So don't pass it by, take a detour - it'll be one of those cd's that won't fall by the wayside or end up in the charity box, you'll want to play it over and over. I certainly have!

Cyndi Lauper - "Detour"
This is the eleventh studio album by Cyndi Lauper. It was released in 2016. It is a mix of the American country with some blues stuff and practically nothing pop. There are the participation of some singers, but the best tracks are those in which she is alone in the vocal. The best tracks are "Misty Blue", "The End Of The World" and "Hard Candy Christmas". It shows its versatility, but the album does not repeat the vigor of the previous one ("Menphis Blues"). Reasonable! Note 5.5.
