God, Others, Self
Archbishop Hannan was an example of a great priest who worked tirelessly for the children of God wherever he was asked to go. In doing so he left his people with examples of a job well done. Those people crossed multi-racial and multi-ethnic backgrounds from the South at a time when they suffered greatly. He never refused a task for the good of his people. With the grace of Almighty God he became a channel of faith, hope and charity. He was the greatest hurricane New Orleans ever experience for peace. I met him once, but loved him for a lifetime.

Great inside look at a genuine American Priest & Bishop
This book is a great trip down memory lane with some very interesting insight as to some of the issues behind the scenes. I lived through most of the time that Archbishop Philip Hannon writes about. Getting an inside view of Vatican II, the Cuban Missle Crisis, and other major events was very enlightening and entertaining. Archbishop Hannon has a very deep faith combined with a hugh measure of common sense, and understanding of humanity. I purchased a copy of this book as a gift for a very good friend after I received a copy for Christmas. Highly recommend.

A man, his family, his calling, his courage, his life.
What a wonderful read. Archbishop Hannon gives us a wonderful account of his life. He had a great love for his parents, his sister and brothers. When he became a priest and war broke out he wanted a combat assignment. The wonderful work he did in the field touched thousands of lives. His great works as bishop and archbishop touched thousands of lives and made them better. He has led an extradinory life and at times it has taken a great deal of courage to lead that life.

A fascinating story!
This was an amazing story in that a dedicated priest had relationships with so many important and famous people while serving the "regular" folks in his community. A great story of heroism, dedication, and faith in God and humankind. A great read.

An Extraordinary Life
Archbishop Philip Hannan is one of the most beloved leaders in New Orleans. But long before he came here after Hurricane Betsy, he led an extraordinary life. In addition to being on the front lines in WWII as a combat chaplain, he had a birds-eye view, and sometimes a hand, in some extraordinary historical events. The book is well-written and offers an insite into history, the Catholic Church, and an indomitable human spirit that has served the archbishop and New Orleans well. A must read!

but great book about a great man
Not finished with it yet, but great book about a great man. Archbishop Hannan was very loved by the people of New Orleans for decades-Catholic and non-Catholic alike. Very interesting story of his journey through the priesthood and his love for his adopted city of New Orleans

I knew the man at the time I was at Notre Dame Seminary 1992-1994
I could relate to his lived experience dealing with military personnel, being a former enlisted and officer in the United States Navy. I loved the way he involved his stories of his family in the biography. I still remember my simple encounters with at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, Louisiana, and the book tells of this man's simple honest experiences.
