A Good Return To Garfield's Origins
Jim Davis gave the world "Garfield" in 1978 and the comics page hasn't been the same since. In this collection of his first year and a half, we get to observe Garfield and Jon go from their beginnings to the building blocks of what they are today. It's fun to revisit characters such as Lyman (Jon's roommate, who disappears later), Nermal, Irma the Waitress, and Doc Liz the vet. The Sunday strips are in color and all strips run in chronological order. The only thing missing from this collection are the asides or other illustrations Jim Davis did for the original books. While the autobiographical data may now be out of date, it does show where he came from. The new material, an introduction by Jim Davis, does make up for most of that. Still, this is a good collection for any comic strip lover to have on their nightstand. Where are the others?

Garfield was actually funny back in the day
I used to read Garfield religiously as a kid, and largely (pun intended) owe my sense of humor to this strip. While it will never, and SHOULD never be mentioned in the same breath as Calvin and Hobbes, Peanuts, or Far Side, it is nonetheless one of the great American cartoon strips... in it's early years. While Garfield hasn't hit it's stride in this volume, you can see that it was populated by characters that are very different from it's later insipid and shallow versions of the characters. Here you'll see the John with an acerbic wit that will turn sharper in later years. Odie is introduced as an empty headed but occasionally devious rival for John's affection. Liz shooting down John with caustic burns. Linus as a dim-witted but affable friend. John's crazy family.... all genuinely funny stuff. You also see Jim Davis slowly morphing into a truly talented artist.Pick this up to find out how Garfield ever became famous in the first place. The first ten or so of these volumes will also be worth reading. Just be ready to jump ship while the strip is still good. And for Gods sake don't bother with anything that's been printed the last 20 years or so...

The Beginning
It's the first year and a half of the comics. Great binding. Every strip. Black and white for the weekdays and full color pages for Sunday. I wish they would continue the collection past volume two, I like the way this series is put together.

Great service!
Love Garfield so this was an awesome way to know what I was getting ( in a very timely fashion) and no hassle of having to go from book store to book store or waiting forever at the local comic shop and it possibly not showing. Highly enjoyable experience all the way around.

Where Garfield started
This is a great collection for any collector and fans of the strip. It's complete and authentic (black and white for dailies and colour for Sunday strips), and all classic re-occurring characters were introduced in the first two years. The short introduction by Jim Davis is a "Nice Touch". For new fans, it's a bit of a historical look on why Garfield was so popular then, exploding into a craze in the following decade.

Buena recopilación
Es una excelente colección, me hubiera gustado más si todo fuera a color, sin embargo me agrada más el hecho que nos dé una buena opción para coleccionar todas las tiras de Garfield

Awesome Volume
Daily strips and Sunday strip all in one volume. Great quality paper, binding and cover. If you are a Garfield fan you will have these but not in one for 1978 and 1979
