Hot Rod (a.k.a. Rebel of the Road) was a 1979 made-for-TV movie starring Gregg Henry, Grant Goodeve and Robert Culp. A drag racer (Gregg Henry) enters a local championship race with a 1965 Plymouth. However, he runs up against the town boss, a corrupt sheriff (Robert Culp) who has already made arrangements to ensure that his own son (Grant Goodeve) wins the race. The movie has now become a cult classic especially for classic car and racing fans. The film also stars Pernell Roberts and Ed Begley Jr.

Last Call For Hotrod Street Racing Before The 80's
This is a film with all the looks of a TV version but the time capsule of what time this film depicts out flanks the fact that it is 1979 with tube camera production and the digital age was around the corner. I worked at GM and the end of rear wheel drive cars was here. The beginning of front wheel drive stamped out vehicles was in the Spring. I asked why they went to front-wheel drive, (something used in the 30's by Cord) and my instructor said "It was what blew the engineers hair back". Rolling razor blades. Ow! This movie has great drag scenes and the drag scenes and car interior lighting is stellar. I drove and raced in this time, this is very close and I can see my friends and me racing at night, no headlights, window down, pipes open, it was the rush of the race that still creates those moments at the lights today where I do not like leaving last...pedal down, do not look back....rv

" That cars fine lookin man ...its somthin ealse!!!"
I have been collecting " Drag Racing" & " Car Movies". Yes "Hot Rod" is a made for T.V. movie but please don't let that dissuade you from being interested in adding it to your car movie collections because it is GREAT!!! So is the 1983 made for T.V. movie "Catch me if you Can"...which is very hard to find on D.V.D.! Some times these made for T.V. films end up better that big budget blockbuster movies because they are forced to make up for a lack of budget with better storylines, more developed characters & good clean family fun!!! The fact that so many made for T.V. movies have become cult classic's that are heavily sought after by collectors helps support my claim. Made in 1979 " Hot Rod" A/K/A Rebel of the road, is placed in that last year of the 70's ushering in the 80's & does a good job reflecting the changing attitudes not only of those two decades but through the characters hints at the attitudes from the 50's & 60's as well using well placed lines from the characters & the soundtrack provided by a D.J. that is introduced as a hitch hiker picked up by our " Hero" telling him " I don't care where your going , I've been standing here since 1959!" The whole history of drag racing is subtly given to the audience through dialogue through out the movie, its roots, its sub culture, and even its anti-hero rebel appeal. Don't look for any Oscar winning acting or huge budget explosions ...just sit back reminisce and have fun. Lots of Fun!!! And if your a Muscle Car lover watch closely & you will see many fine cars!

Great movie
This is a fantastic “car” movie, that for a late 70’s made for TV movie is truly well done! With so many awesome cars! I was 12 when this movie was on tv (about 43 years ago) and I think I caught part of it on late night tv about 30 years ago. I has a decent plot line and some very good retro drag racing.Such a great window into a time long gone!So very glad I bought it. 👍

Great movie.
Great movie. Lots of antique street and race cars. Lots of real drag racing from Fremont Drag Way made up to be Lion Drag Strip. Can't beat a 65 Satellite or a 40 Willy's with a Hemi in it. Same ole story though, good guy goes after the bad guys that run the town. Bunch of great actors too. A movie that all car guys will want to see and add to their collections.
